SYLLABUS 

Fall 2019

Course Description

Painting 1 is a basic studio course in the media and techniques of painting. Activity will emphasize the study of color, structure, creativity and aesthetic values in general. A command of techniques and materials, both traditional and experimental, will be taught.
Painting 2 will receive more advanced assignments with increasing emphasis on the expressive possibilities of the medium.

Course Objectives

  • Student will identify and utilize a variety of historical and contemporary painting styles.

  • Student will describe and apply the elements and principles of design in paintings.

  • Student will identify and utilize the principles of color theory in paintings.

  • Student will experiment with a variety of painting techniques to develop a working knowledge of the creative potential of each technique.

  • Student will synthesize the elements and principles of two-dimensional design and color theory to solve design problems.

  • Student will analyze and depict spatial relationships in a composition using both realistic and abstract representation.

  • Student will describe and apply hand and power tools to prepare surfaces for painting.

  • Student will experiment with a variety of painting surfaces in order to describe and explain how paint reacts to different surface qualities.

  • Student will use a variety of projection technologies to manipulate and transfer images to surfaces.

  • Student will use art vocabulary and concepts in oral and written contexts to analyze their work and the work of other painters.

  • Student will develop a portfolio of paintings and/or other comprehensive projects applying professional standards and practices.

Attendance Policy

Attendance for all classes is mandatory. If students are not in class, I cannot do the job of evaluation!
Don’t be late, don’t leave early, don’t miss class!

Attendance represents 10% of a student’s final grade. Students are allowed 5 absences over the course of the semester. Excessive absences (more than 5 total) will affect the final grade as follows.
Absent more than 5 classes = One letter grade drop
Absent more than 6 classes = Two letter grade drops
Absent more than 7 classes = Failure

  • Arriving 15 minutes after class begins makes a student late to class. Three late arrivals = one unexcused absence.

  • Students should remain in class for the entire three hours except for breaks.

  • Leaving class early before I dismiss everyone is disruptive and unfair to others in the class.

  • Arriving late, leaving early on a regular basis is chronic absenteeism and will bring a student’s grade down.

  • Each student must attend the first class meeting or make arrangements with the instructor of he/she is going to be absent. Failure to attend the first class meeting will result in being dropped from the class.

  • Though a student may be dropped, he/she must drop classes according to the posted deadlines to ensure refunds and unsatisfactory grades.

  • When returning to class after an absence, speak with me immediately so that I can give you any missed handouts and/or assignments.

Grading

  • "A" grades are given for outstanding work that decisively exceeds the basic requirements of the class . This includes being an active, contributing member of the class. Learned formal skills are at a high level of execution, content, craftsmanship and presentation of the portfolio showsquality control (no spelling errors) and attention to detail (good formatting).\

  • "B" grades are given for work that exceeds the basic requirements of the class. A ‘B’ letter grade will not be given if a student accumulates more than 5 unexcused classes, no matetr the quality of the work.

  • "C" grades are given for that meets but does not exceed the basic requirements of the class. You are meeting an acceptable level or expectation. Improvements will be towards acceptable levels of project requirements.

  • "D" grades are given for below=average work. You are under-achieving in quality and/or motivation.

  • "F" grades are given for failure to make a minimal effort. You are not reaching the expected level for college work.

Grade apportionment

  • 10% attendance and participation

  • 10% Research presentation

  • 10% Color quiz

  • 70% Final portfolio presentation

Portfolio Reviews

Students will submit a digital portfolio of their work for final evaluation. Portfolios must be submitted on time to receive full credit.

Classroom Environment

Designated Seating

At the beginning of the semester you will be assigned a place in the classroom for the duration of the class.

Critiques

After each project we will hold an informal critique in which each person presents their drawing. The purpose of a critique is to help students articulate the issues driving their work and to practice communication skills. Attendance is mandatory. Missed critiques will result in a reduction of your score by one letter grade.

Clean up

Leave the studio/lab as clean and neat as you possibly can.  I have and will continue to try to provide you with as clean and pleasant an environment in which to work and learn as possible.  However, I cannot and will not do it alone.  We must work together for the health, safety and well being of all. Their are specific protocols fro disposing of the hazardous materials used in class.

  • Gamsol will be disposed in the yellow-topped black barrel in the courtyard. Never put Gamsol down the drain.

  • Empty tubes of paint, disposable palette paper and rags and paper towels will be disposed of in the metal containers by the front door. Never put these materials in the general trash can by the sink.

  • Easels, carts and chairs must all be placed neatly back into storage at the end of class.

To further your success, reinforce concepts, and achieve the stated learning objectives for this course, I refer you to the Academic Success Center learning assistance services.  Upon request for tutorial services, you will be automatically enrolled in NC 3:  Supervised Tutoring, a free noncredit course that does not appear on your transcripts. 

Services are located in the ASC (420), the Writing Center (420D), the Reading Center (420), Math Center (426), the Library/LRC Interdisciplinary Tutoring Lab, MESA, specialized on-campus School tutoring labs, the Higher Education Center at National City, and the San Ysidro Education Center.  Online learning materials and Online Writing Lab (OWL) are available at www.swccd.edu/~asc

Advisory Statement

The subjects and material covered in this course may sometimes be of such a nature as to be offensive to your personal beliefs. Politics, religion, sexuality and morality have often been the content of artists’ efforts and will be discussed openly and in a mature manner with no intent to create a hostile environment.

Plagiarism
 

Academic dishonesty of any type by a student provides grounds for disciplinary action by the instructor or college. In written work, no material may be copied from another without proper quotation marks, footnotes, or appropriate documentation.

Field trips


All field trips are mandatory. If you cannot attend a field trip due to sickness ort some other situation, you will be expected to make up the trip, especially if a writing assignment is attached to the visit.

Out of class assignments

In the event that I must cancel class due to sickness or any other reason you will be given an assignment to make up the work missed in class.
